Updating surface water, groundwater and treated effluent monitoring procedures

EcoFutures were engaged to update and develop a generic monitoring procedure for sampling surface water, groundwater, and treated effluent for a mining client. As part of the project EcoFutures undertook the following tasks:

  • Desktop review and gap analysis of existing procedures for sampling surface water, groundwater and treated effluent against current industry guidelines, Environmental Authority (EA) conditions across 9 mine sites and requirements defined by the Department of Environment and Science.
  • Completed three workshops with an internal working group of key staff members to seek feedback on the procedures and identify potential information gaps.
  • Development of updated generic monitoring procedures for sampling surface water, groundwater, and treated effluent to be applied across the 9 mine sites.

The updated generic monitoring procedures included (but not limited to) identification of roles and responsibilities for staff, details of workplace health and safety requirements, sampling preparation and equipment, sample collection and preservation, sample integrity and quality control, as well as auditing and compliance.

The overarching procedures for surface water, groundwater and treated effluent will be utilised in the future to develop site specific SOPs to address EA requirements for the 9 mine sites. In addition, the SOPs will also ensure consistent sampling, improved quality of sampling results and reduce the risk of non-compliance with EA requirements.
