Monash University Nature Positive Planning
Mosaic Insights and others in the Alluvium Group supported Monash University’s Nature+ Plan by assessing campus ecosystems, biodiversity, and urban heat to guide climate-resilient, sustainable campus planning and design.

Monash University’s Nature+ Plan was transforming campus ecosystems to mitigate and adapt to climate change while fostering rich, native habitats. As campus development intensifies and climate uncertainty grows, Monash must sustain healthy ecosystems to preserve its ecological assets for the future.
To support this vision, Alluvium led an integrated assessment, engaging experts in climate science, water water resource engineering, biological and ecological landscapes, and urban greening. The project began with comprehensive campus surveys to establish empirical baselines, assess biodiversity, and analyse urban heat and canopy coverage. Using data-driven insights, we provided evidence-based recommendations for sustainable campus planning and management, ensuring Monash’s grounds serve as ‘living laboratories’ for students, researchers, and planners.
Key components included a Habitat and Biodiversity Survey to evaluate ecosystem health, an Urban Canopy Survey to measure tree coverage, and an Urban Thermal Survey to assess microclimate conditions. These insights has informed Monash’s master planning, landscape strategies, and design standards, ensuring resilient and sustainable campus environments
