Hattah Lakes Blue Green Algae

EcoFutures developed an automated spatial analysis workflow to help Mallee CMA understand flood patterns and manage Blue Green Algae in Hattah Lakes.

The Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) aimed to study the Hattah Lakes’ Blue Green Algae problem. Understanding how water levels and inundation patterns impact the lakes is crucial for managing the environmental health of the area.

Mosaic Insights, in collaboration with EcoFutures, was engaged by the Mallee CMA to analyse flood water depth data for the Hattah Lakes. The project involved examining two-monthly maximum flood water depth spatial time-series from 1988 to 2022 for the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB). The goal was to determine the proportion of dry land versus inundated areas across 13 lakes, and calculate key statistics for water depth.

To achieve this, an automated workflow using Jupyter Notebook and various Python packages (e.g., numpy, pandas, geopandas, rasterio) was developed. This workflow delineated the lakes and extracted depth and inundation data, contributing valuable insights for managing Blue Green Algae and lake health.
